By Air There are 4 international airports in Bulgaria. The biggest Bulgarian airport is Sofia Airport. Plovdiv International airport is mainly used for charter flights for the ski resorts. The international airports of Varna and Bourgas are used for local flights from Sofia, as well as for charter flights during the summer, serving the beach resorts around these 2 cities on the Black Sea coast. As with most plans in the pipeline in Bulgaria, there are only rumours at the moment of a refurbishment plan for the cargo airport in Gorna into a passenger airport, to happen in the next year or so. It is about 15 minutes from Veliko Turnovo and excellent news (if it happens) for anyone who chooses the beautiful mountain areas instead of the coast. It will reduce the journey from sofia or varna by 2 hours.
To search for flights with many airlines at once, try the flight search engine www.skyscanner.net , it compares uptodate prices of flights for many of the airlines flying to Bulgaria but not all of them, so check out the links page for more.
UK to Bulgarian coast – during the summer, you have many to choose from, as nearly all UK holiday companies run charter flights and package holidays to the airports Varna and Bourgas. Check out the travel agents for bargains. Balkan holidays are an expert on Bulgaria and you could get accommodation in a package deal that suits your viewing needs.
UK to Ski slopes – The same holiday companies change their location and you’ll find bargains to Plovdiv and Sofia airport during the skiing season. As above, try your travel agents.
Regular flights – We have found regular cheap flights with British Airways, Hemus Air, Bulgaria Air and the Budget airline Wizzair. They fly from many European cities and you’ll find many English airports direct to Bulgaria on non-stop flights.
It would take too long to list all the routes so go direct to the airlines and websites on our links page. If you have any questions, just contact us and we’ll help.
Car Hire Driving in Bulgaria is fine if you are confident of your left hand driving. The roads are being improved through EU funding and you can find your way easily with one main road from the west border to east and the same again from north to south. Car hire is cheap but with local companies, expect cars to be older and not brand new. The average cost of a car from the national companies may be 20 euros per day and 12-15 euros per day with a smaller, local company. As with UK rentals, you must take both parts of your driving license.
Ferry When you find the property of your dreams and maybe you wish to drive all your belongings or pets to Bulgaria, you can reduce your driving time and make the trip more enjoyable by taking the ferry. There are many routes that you can take arriving on the Greek or Montenegro coast. For example, you can travel from Barcelona overnight on a wonderful ferry (cruise quality) arriving in Italy in the morning. Drive roughly four hours across Italy to Ancona, then taking another overnight ferry (basic) to Montenegro. It took 14 hours to drive from the port to the centre of Bulgaria. Every trip is different depending on the likes and dislikes of the traveller. Wonderful scenery through Italy and Montenegro made it enjoyable, but more untravelled and inexperienced travellers may not enjoy the many check points you have to pass through Serbia and Kosovo. Check the links page for the website for ferry agents.
Coach You can travel to Bulgaria from the UK easily by National Express. Check for your nearest station and price on their wesite on our links page. Bulgaria also has an excellent network of coaches throughout the country. If you don’t like to drive then they are a very cheap and much quicker option than the national train service that still needs to be updated to match UK standards.
